Children at Work
Play based learning, "children learn through their play", "project based approach" "emergent curriculum" . These are things I am sure you have heard alot of in the past few years.
On this page we will show you how this is implemplented in your childs room. We will show you the answers to questions many parents have.
How does my child learn through this method of teaching?
How is playing learning?
What does this mean for my childs education?
What is the role of the teacher?
How do the teachers teach?
The answers to these questions will be easy to show you, as it amazes us how much the students are learning everyday through their play, and exploring their environment. The challange is documenting everything, because they are saying/doing so much!
It is our hope that through pictures, and sharing dialog between the children, we can help you understand a bit more about the FDK play based learning program.
ENJOY!

In these photos we have two students playing with a variety of blocks, and trucks. This is a common sight in our classroom, there is alway a group of children in the constuction area!
During this play the boys decided to build a pit to dump the "rocks" (coloured blocks) into. They even added a ramp to make it easier for the trucks to dump their load!
From now on I will refer to the boys as A and B.
Here is some of the dialog A & B used during their play:
A: "Wow look at all thoes blocks B!"
B: "I know that was a big one"
A " How many more can we fit?"
B: "ummmmm I don't know (shrugged shoulders and paused) lets find out"
Teacher: "can you guess how many"
A: "A thousand!"
B: "HAHAHAHAHA NOOOOOOO"
Teacher: "Well lets count
A: " Lets get all circles this time"
B: "Look at mine its so full"
This play lasted about 20 minutes, they continued to fill the pit with different shaped blocks. One lod was all green/vert, another load was all triangles but different colours. We talked about all the colours in french, and counted in french how mant blocks fit into a truck.
