Keeping children reading in summer can help them start off the next school year on the right foot and with confidence! Research has shown that reading in summer is one of the most effective ways to eliminate the “summer gap”.
Some ideas:
· Create a reading/writing “creativity space”. Get your child to help choose a quiet corner in the house where they can design a space that is all their own – think forts, tents, pillows, fun paper, mini books, crayons, markers and nice pencils!
· Sign up for a summer reading club! It keeps kids motivated to go visit the library and they often have great prizes!
· Set time aside to read every day – continuing the routine of reading before bed helps to make the transition back to school in September easier. A good summer reading goal is 3-5 times a week for 20 minutes.
· Create treasure hunts, word searches, …
· Lead by example! Spend time every day reading a good book!
