The students were very excited to share their weekend adventures this morning! a lot of children mentioned visiting a pumpkin patch this weekend! We are renovating our dramatic play area! The dramatic play area is a very popular place in our classroom. As a class we discussed what we could turn into next. A castle had the majority of the votes. So the students have begun creating lists of things we need to make for our castle. We have found that large boxes will be required to build a lot of the items. If you have some large boxes at home, and you are willing to donate them we would be very grateful! Playdough If you are able to make some playdough at home for our class it would be a great help. I have added a playdough recipe below. Thank-you again for supporting our class! Play Dough Recipe: 1 cup white flour 1/2 cup salt 2 tablespoon cream of tartar (find it in the spice section) 1 tablespoon oil 1 cup water food coloring Mix first 4 ingredients in a pan. Add water and mix well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 3 – 5 minutes. Dough will become difficult to stir and form a “clump”. Remove from stove and knead for 5 minutes–add food coloring during kneading process. Play dough will keep for a long time stored in a covered plastic container or plastic sandwich bag. Step 1
In a group the students designed a parachute, and made a list of supplies they needed to create it. Step 2 The students worked together to create the parachute they designed. Step 3 We tested the parachutes using eggs as the cargo! We wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Reminder: Tomorrow id a PD day We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the apples!! The children were so excited about tasting the different coloured apples. We started by sorting the apples by colour. One of the students observed some of the apples had both green and red on them. She decided they were mostly red, so put them with the red apples. After the apples were sorted the apples were washed and cut by Mme Kirkwood. While the apples were being prepared Mme. McCloy introduced graphing to the students. This activity was done in French! She asked the question: "Which colour do you think you will like best?" The students wrote their name on the coloured paper of their choice, and added it to the graph. We counted in French to see which colour had the most. Then the best part! The tasting! The children became scientists! They nibbled, and compared the three pieces of apple. There was some Great dialog! " I got a big yellow piece" "This one tastes like a pear" "The yellow one is sweet" "The red one is the sweetest" "The green one is sour" "This is a great experiment!" After they were done taste testing, we took another poll. The question was "Which apple did you like best?" The students added their name to the new graph. We then compared the two graphs to see how they had changed. We found it very interesting that the green apples were the least popular before the tasting, but became the favorite after the tasting. This activity can be linked to many curriculum expectations: Graphing Sorting Comparing Predicting French Language What a great day! Again a big THANK-YOU! for supporting our class, by sending in apples. Bonjour tout le monde! It is so hard to believe that it is already October! The first month has flown by! We are well settled in to our routines and we are beginning to start up some awesome inquiry projects! On Friday we would like to do some apple tasting! One of the questions that has come up as a part of our apple inquiry is: Which colour apple tastes best? Each child will try one piece of red apple, yellow apple and green apple. From this we can do some great opinion practice in French, counting, graphing and so much more! If you DO NOT want your child to participate with eating apples please e-mail me back to let me know. If you are able to help send in an apple or two for Friday (especially green and yellow-ish ones) please also let me know - it would be greatly appreciated! We are also working on some egg parachutes! On Friday we will have an egg dropping challenge to see if we can make a parachute so that the egg does not break! Today we designed them, tomorrow we will make them and Friday we will test them! Fun times in SK-C! |
