We have some new friends in our class! We recently opened an entomology lab in our classroom and have begun to look very closely at our new caterpillar friends. We know lots about the life cycle of the butterfly (smart kiddos!), so we are working hard on noticing details and using scientific words to describe what we see. Each day, like the good scientists we are, we add to our Entomology Journals! At the end we will bring them home to share our findings!
Students have begun to use non standard units of measurement to keep track of how big the caterpillars are getting. In our book that we read this morning, it said that they would begin to change when they were about the size of our little finger. This morning we made lots of measurement observations using our fingers! We also tried with some other body parts (there was a big discussion about feet!), but as our little friends are so small we stuck with our little fingers!
